Cornwall has it all! Great beaches, stunning coastal views, rugged moorland, quaint villages and harbours, mystical creatures – the Cornish Pisky!!!
What is really great about Cornwall for me though, is the amazing vast range of local Cornish produce, from pasties to scones and clotted cream, to wine beers and ales. Our unique rich soils and warm maritime climate means Cornwall can produce a varied and bountiful supply of veg, fruit, meat and fish. Traditions, knowledge and skill in the kitchen are passed down through generations, resulting in delicious tasty recipes that are now available for us all to enjoy.
Here is just a small example of what the Duchy has to offer.
Cornish Pasty
The world famous Cornish Pasty that has now been given its own protected status! Let’s be honest you can’t come to Cornwall and not try a proper Cornish Pasty!!! It’s hard to beat the traditional steak pasty, but there are certainly lots of other delicious flavours to try; steak and Stilton; lamb and mint; or even Apple and blackberry! The Chough Bakery in Padstow, situated on the harbour front is renowned for its delicious bakes.
Cornish Cream Tea
Another winner is a freshly baked scone with local jam and thick dollop of Cornish Clotted Cream on top. Delicious! Many local cafes, pubs and tea rooms offer this lovely treat and for me, the cream makes it! Rodda’s Clotted Cream is one of the few British foods to be awarded a protected designation of origin. Rodda’s certainly know what they are doing; the family has been producing the cream in Cornwall since 1890. Just remember though, when having a Cornish cream tea the jam goes on first, THEN the cream!
Ice cream
The lush pastures around Cornwall and the fresh, clean air of the coast must help in raising healthy cattle and producing great tasting milk (see where I’m going with this…) and therefore lovely ice cream! Many ice creams are produced in Cornwall using great local ingredients, giving us a vast variety of flavours. Roskilly’s is renowned for using organic ingredients and produces fab ice cream as well as yogurt, milk, sorbets and organic fudge.
Chocolate
Another Cornish company that uses only the finest ingredients is Kernow Chocolate. This company has a viewing area at their chocolate factory, just 2 miles down the road from us at Music Water Touring Park, and sells the most amazing chocolate. Try anything from orange to mint, and my personal favourite Caramel Sea Salt!
Cornish Fudge
Another tasty treat with a large selection of yummy flavours is fudge. The best kind, I think, is made with clotted cream. From Rum and Raisin to Strawberry or Pistachio, you will certainly have a lot to try. Most fudge shops sell a variety bag of assorted fudge pieces – perfect if you want to try them all (which I can personally recommend!) Buttermilk Confections, in nearby Wadebridge, produce lots of delicious treats, like fudge, marzipan, and peanut brittle.
Wines, Beers and Ales
It’s not only great food that is produced in Cornwall, but also some top-quality, awarding-winning drink too, from wine to gin and beer to cider! The warm climate and lush land help Cornwall to produce just what is needed. Camel Valley wines do just that to make their world class wines. Close to Music Water are two more local companies: Padstow Brewing Company and Trevibban Mill. Padstow Brewing Company are a micro-brewery which produce and sell a small selection of artisan beers and ales, even making a beer brewed especially for Padstow May Day celebrations. Trevibban Mill is a family run vineyard and orchard, who produce amazing organic wines and ciders. On a wet day you can just go tasting and try one or two glasses (just a thought!)
Just a tiny selection of some of my favourite things Cornwall produces. I also like the local meat, fish, breads, pies, sausages, jams, tea, cakes, chutneys…………………..
